What is a cognitive assessment?

A cognitive assessment (WPPSI, WISC, WAIS) is an individually administered intelligence test for individuals that can be completed without reading or writing. The test can take up to 2 hours to administer and generates a Full Scale IQ (formerly known as an intelligence quotient or IQ score) which represents an individual’s general intellectual ability. It also provides four to five primary index scores that represent an individuals ability in more discrete cognitive domains.

What is a Specific Learning Disorder Assessment ?

A specific learning disorder assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that is conducted to identify whether a person has a specific learning disorder, such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, or dysgraphia. The assessment typically involves a range of tests, observations, and interviews to assess a person’s cognitive and academic abilities, as well as their overall development.

The assessment process may include tests of reading, writing, math, and other skills, as well as an assessment of the person’s intellectual functioning and memory. Additionally, the assessment may involve interviews with the person and their family members, as well as observation of the person in academic and non-academic settings.

The purpose of the assessment is to identify any learning difficulties that the person may be experiencing and to develop recommendations for support and intervention to help the person overcome these difficulties. The results of the assessment can also be used to inform decisions about academic accommodations and other supports that may be necessary for the person to succeed in school or other settings.

ADHD Assessment

What is a ADHD assessment?

An ADHD assessment is a process used to diagnose Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The assessment involves various methods, including interviews, questionnaires, medical evaluations, and observations. The assessment typically involves gathering information from multiple sources, including the individual being evaluated, their parents or caregivers (if applicable), teachers, and other professionals involved in their care.

The goal of the assessment is to identify symptoms and determine if they meet the criteria for ADHD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The DSM-5 outlines specific criteria for diagnosing ADHD, which include persistent inattention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with daily functioning in multiple settings.

After the assessment, your psychologist will provide a diagnosis and recommendations for treatment, which may include a referral for medication, therapy, and/or other interventions to help manage symptoms and improve daily functioning.

Aspire Health and Psychology offers ADHD assessments to address a variety of questions commonly asked by adults, parents and children such as:

  • Why am I having trouble paying attention?
  • Why cant I sit still and focus?
  • Why is my child having impulse control and behavioural issues?
  • Do I or my child have problems with memory?
  • Do I or my child have processing difficulties?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ( ADHD) Assessments are able to give us clarity on whether issues related to learning, attention, focus, behavour, anxiety are related to ADHD.

This can be extremely beneficial to ensuring you or your child’s success. This is particularly helpful for learning and socialising at school as well as performing in the workplace. This helps identify areas that require additional support and what skills a person possesses.
